The Acronym Generator turns a phrase into an acronym by taking the first letter of each word — “random access memory” becomes RAM. You can skip minor words like “of” and “the” (the reason LASER has no O for “of”), or take the first two or three letters of each word for pronounceable, syllable-style abbreviations.

How do I make an acronym from a phrase?

Type the phrase and the tool takes the first letter of each word — “frequently asked questions” gives FAQ. Enable “skip minor words” to ignore articles and prepositions like the, of and for, which is how most real acronyms are formed.

What is a backronym?

A backronym works backwards: you start with the letters and invent a phrase to fit them. The reverse mode here does exactly that, picking words from your list whose initials spell your acronym.

Why does the reverse mode need my own word list?

Because good backronyms depend on context — a robotics team wants different words than a study group. The tool matches your acronym's letters against words you provide, so every suggestion is relevant. It does not ship a dictionary and does not use AI.

What is the difference between an acronym and an initialism?
