About the Word Counter
The ByteTools Word Counter gives you a live word count, character count (with and without spaces), sentence count, paragraph count and estimated reading time as you type or paste text. It is built for writers, students, editors and marketers who need to hit precise length targets.
Everything is calculated locally in your browser using JavaScript — your text is never uploaded to a server, so it is safe to check confidential documents, unpublished articles or exam essays.
Use it to keep tweets under 280 characters, meta descriptions under 160 characters, college essays within word limits, or blog posts long enough for SEO.
Frequently asked questions
How does the word counter count words?
Words are counted by splitting the text on whitespace, so any sequence of characters separated by spaces, tabs or line breaks counts as one word. Numbers, abbreviations and hyphenated terms like 'e-commerce' count as single words — the same method used by most word processors.
Does the character count include spaces?
Both values are shown: total characters including spaces, and characters excluding spaces. Social networks and meta description limits usually count spaces, so use the 'with spaces' number for those.
How is reading time calculated?
Reading time uses an average adult reading speed of 225 words per minute. A 900-word article shows roughly a 4-minute read, which matches the estimates used by platforms like Medium.
Is my text uploaded or stored anywhere?
No. The counter runs entirely in your browser with JavaScript. Nothing is transmitted, logged or stored, making it safe for confidential and unpublished material.
How many words is 1000 characters?
English averages about 5 characters per word plus a space, so 1000 characters is roughly 150–180 words. Paste your text to get the exact ratio for your writing style.
