Area is πr² for round and springform pans, length × width for squares, rectangles and loaf tins, and π(R² − r²) for a bundt with its centre core removed. Batter volume is area × pan depth × fill level, and the recipe multiplier is simply new batter volume ÷ original batter volume. Because the multiplier is a ratio, the fill level cancels out and only affects the cup figures. The suggested time assumes you bake the same batter in the other pan, so it scales with batter depth and is clamped between half and 1.8 times the original — always start checking 10 minutes early and trust a skewer over a clock. Shallower batter also browns faster, so dropping the oven 15 °F / 10 °C is often worth it. Fluted bundt pans and tapered loaf tins hold noticeably less than these straight-sided formulas suggest; if the manufacturer prints a capacity, trust that instead.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a 9 inch pan instead of an 8 inch pan?

Yes, with an adjustment. A 9-inch round has about 27 per cent more area than an 8-inch round, so the same batter sits noticeably shallower and bakes faster — start checking around 8 to 10 minutes early. To fill it properly, scale the recipe up by roughly 1.27.

What pan can I substitute for a 9x13?

A 9 by 13 inch pan has 117 square inches of area, close to two 9-inch rounds at 127 square inches combined. Two 8-inch rounds come to 101, so you would be a little short. The calculator gives you the exact multiplier for whatever pair you are choosing between.

How full should I fill a cake pan?

Two thirds is the usual guidance for a cake with leavening, which is the default here. Fill higher and it will dome and spill; fill much lower and you get a thin, dry layer. Dense batters such as brownies or pound cake tolerate a fuller pan.

Do I need to change the bake time when I change pan size?

Yes, and the driver is batter depth rather than pan size. Shallower batter in a wider pan bakes faster and browns more, so this calculator scales the suggested time in proportion to depth. Treat it as a starting point and test with a skewer.

How do I calculate the volume of a bundt pan?

Take the area of the outer circle, subtract the area of the centre core, and multiply by the depth — the formula used here. Note that fluted bundt pans hold noticeably less than that because of the shaping, so a printed manufacturer capacity beats the arithmetic if you have one.

Should I lower the oven temperature for a bigger pan?

Often, yes. Batter spread thinner over more area browns before the centre sets, so dropping the oven by about 15 °F or 10 °C and baking a little longer gives a more even result. The opposite applies when you go to a deeper pan.
