Balance Transfer Calculator
Model a 0% balance transfer: the transfer fee, the payment needed to clear before the promo ends, what the revert APR costs, and the saving versus staying put.
Transfer vs staying put
| Plan | Time to clear | Interest + fees | Total paid |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stay on the current card | 2 yr 2 mo | $1,629.87 | $7,629.87 |
| Transfer to the promo card | 1 yr 9 mo | $210.77 | $6,210.77 |
The fee is added to the transferred balance and counted as a cost. This model assumes no new spending on either card and a payment that stays flat. Real cards apply payments to the highest-rate portion first and some withdraw the promo rate on a late payment — check the offer's terms. Estimates only, not financial advice.
What is the Balance Transfer Calculator?
The ByteTools Balance Transfer Calculator works out whether a promotional-rate card actually helps. The transfer fee is a percentage of the balance and gets added to what you owe, so the first thing this tool shows is the real amount landing on the new card — then it runs your monthly payment through the promotional months and, if anything is left, through the revert APR afterwards.
- Transfer fee calculated as a percentage and added to the balance
- Solves the exact monthly payment that clears the balance within the promo
- One-click to adopt that payment when your plan falls short
- Applies the revert APR to whatever is left after the promo
- Side-by-side comparison against staying on your current card
- Local, private calculation; estimates only, not advice

About the Balance Transfer Calculator
The ByteTools Balance Transfer Calculator works out whether a promotional-rate card actually helps. The transfer fee is a percentage of the balance and gets added to what you owe, so the first thing this tool shows is the real amount landing on the new card — then it runs your monthly payment through the promotional months and, if anything is left, through the revert APR afterwards.
The most useful number here is the payment required to clear the whole balance inside the promotional window. If your planned payment falls short, the tool tells you exactly how much would still be owing when the promo ends and offers to set the payment that would finish the job in time.
Against that it runs the same payment on your current card at its existing APR, so you can see the saving in interest and months. All figures are calculated in your browser and nothing is uploaded. Estimates only, not financial advice.
Frequently asked questions
Is a 0% balance transfer worth the fee?
Usually yes if you clear the balance within the promotional period, because a one-off 3% fee is far cheaper than a year of interest at 20% or more. It stops being worth it if a large balance rolls into the revert APR, which is exactly what this calculator checks.
How much is a typical balance transfer fee?
Most cards charge 3% to 5% of the amount transferred, sometimes with a minimum. On a $6,000 transfer a 3% fee is $180, added to your balance so you are repaying it too. Enter your card's actual percentage to see the cash figure.
What payment do I need to clear the balance before the promo ends?
Divide the transferred balance, including the fee, across the promotional months — at a true 0% rate that is simple division. This tool calculates it properly for any promotional APR and shows it as a headline figure.
What happens if I do not pay it off in time?
Whatever is left starts accruing at the revert APR, which is often higher than the card you came from. This calculator shows the exact balance remaining at the end of the promo and continues the schedule at the revert rate so you can see the real total cost.
Can I keep transferring the balance to new cards?
Sometimes, but each transfer costs another fee, approval is not guaranteed, and repeated applications hurt your credit. Treat a transfer as a window to clear the debt rather than a way to defer it indefinitely.
