What is the Barbell Plate Calculator?

About the Barbell Plate Calculator

The ByteTools Barbell Plate Calculator answers the question you have already done badly in your head between sets: what goes on each side for this weight? Enter the target, pick your bar, and it lists the plates for one side in the order you would slide them on.

The difference from a generic chart is that it only uses plates you actually own. Edit the inventory to match your gym — sizes and how many pairs of each — and the solver searches every combination of them, so a missing pair of 20s produces a real answer instead of an impossible one. When your set cannot reach the target exactly it tells you the closest weight above and below rather than silently rounding.

It also builds a warm-up ladder at 40, 55, 70, 85 and 100 percent of your top set, with every rung rounded to something you can genuinely load. Everything runs in your browser; your training numbers are never uploaded.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an Olympic barbell weigh?

A standard men's Olympic bar is 20 kg (about 45 lb) and a women's Olympic bar is 15 kg (about 33 lb). Training and technique bars run 10 kg and below, and many commercial-gym bars are lighter than they look — weigh yours if the number matters.

How do I calculate plates per side?

Subtract the bar weight from your target and halve the result — that is what goes on each side. For 100 kg on a 20 kg bar that is (100 − 20) ÷ 2 = 40 kg per side. This tool then works out which of your plates add up to that number.

What if I cannot load the exact weight I want?

The calculator tells you the closest loadable weight below your target and the closest above, so you can pick. This happens constantly in gyms without micro plates — a 2.5 lb or 1.25 kg pair is usually the cheapest fix for it.

Does the calculator account for collars?

Yes. Enter the weight of one collar in the collar field and it is counted on both ends. Spring clips weigh almost nothing so leave it at zero; competition collars are 2.5 kg each and genuinely change the number.

Why does the answer change when I edit the plate list?

Because the solver only uses what you tell it you own. If you take away the pair of 20 kg plates, a 40 kg side has to be built from 25 + 15 or 25 + 10 + 5 instead — and if nothing adds up exactly, it reports the nearest loadable weight.

Is the warm-up ladder a training programme?

No, it is just a convenient default. A 40/55/70/85/100 ramp suits general strength work, but your own programme, the lift and how you feel on the day matter more. Adjust it rather than following it blindly.
