A UK 215 × 65 mm brick with a 10 mm joint gives about 59 per square metre, the familiar "60 bricks per m²". Frequently asked questions
How many bricks are in a square foot?
About 6.9 modular bricks or 6.6 standard bricks per square foot of single-wythe wall, once the 3/8 in mortar joint is counted. Larger units go further: a queen brick is about 5.8 per square foot, a utility brick 3, and an 8 in concrete block just 1.125.
How many bricks per square metre?
A UK or EU standard brick is 215 by 65 mm, and with a 10 mm joint each one occupies 225 by 75 mm — so about 59 bricks per square metre for a single-skin wall, which is where the familiar rule of 60 per square metre comes from. A one-brick wall doubles it to roughly 120.
Should I subtract windows and doors from a brick count?
Yes for anything of a reasonable size, and this calculator deducts each opening you enter. Small openings are often left in as a safety margin, since you will cut bricks around every jamb and the offcuts are rarely reusable.
How much extra brick should I order?
Five per cent for a plain running bond, and closer to ten for a patterned bond, lots of corners or a job with many cuts. Ordering short is far more expensive than ordering long, because a second delivery rarely matches the first batch for colour.
How much mortar does a brick wall need?
Roughly 7 to 8 cubic feet of mortar per 1,000 modular bricks with standard 3/8 in joints, before allowing for what falls off the board. This calculator derives the figure from your own unit size, joint thickness and wall depth rather than assuming a single number.
