How do I brighten a dark photo online?

What's the difference between brightness and contrast?

Brightness shifts every pixel lighter or darker by the same amount, like turning a lamp up or down. Contrast changes the spread between darks and lights — more contrast makes shadows deeper and highlights brighter, giving the image punch.

Why do my photos look washed out after brightening?

Raising brightness alone lifts blacks toward gray, flattening the image. Compensate by increasing contrast slightly — it restores deep shadows while keeping the brighter midtones you wanted.

Does adjusting brightness reduce image quality?
