About the Compress Video to Target Size

The ByteTools target-size video compressor squeezes a video under an exact megabyte limit — the job you face when Discord says 10 MB, WhatsApp complains, or an email attachment bounces. Enter the size you need and the tool reads your video's duration, computes the exact bitrate that lands on that size, and re-encodes with H.264.

This is different from a generic quality slider: the math runs backwards from your limit. Total bits = target size; subtract the audio budget; what remains sets the video bitrate, with a small safety margin for container overhead so the result comes in at or just under your number.

Everything runs 100% locally in your browser — the video is never uploaded, so private clips stay private. Be aware that in-browser video encoding is CPU-heavy: short clips are quick, but long or high-resolution videos take a while. Very small targets on long videos will look heavily compressed — that is physics, not a bug.

How does the tool hit an exact file size?

File size is bitrate times duration, so the calculation runs in reverse: your target size in megabits, divided by the duration in seconds, minus the audio bitrate, is the video bitrate. A ~5% margin is reserved for container overhead so the file lands at or just under target.

Will the quality be bad at small sizes?

It depends entirely on duration and resolution: 10 MB is fine for a 30-second clip but very rough for ten minutes of 1080p. If the calculated bitrate shown before encoding looks very low (under ~300 kbps), consider trimming the video or accepting a larger target.

Why does the compression take so long?

Your own computer does the encoding — nothing is sent to a server. That is what keeps the video private, but it means long or high-resolution files take real time. Keep the tab open and let it finish.

What if my target is too small for the video?

The tool warns you instead of producing garbage: if the computed video bitrate falls below a usable floor, you will be asked to raise the target. Trimming the clip shorter first is the other way to fit a tight limit.
