About the Exponent Calculator
The ByteTools Exponent Calculator raises any base to any power. It supports positive, negative and fractional exponents, so it handles everything from 2⁵ to 8^(1/3) and 5⁻². The result and the full expression are shown together, making it easy to check your working.
It is built for algebra students, scientists, engineers and anyone dealing with powers, roots or scientific notation. Because a negative exponent means a reciprocal and a fractional exponent means a root, the calculator quietly covers those cases too.
All the maths runs in your browser with JavaScript using precise floating-point arithmetic. Nothing is uploaded, so it is private, instant and works offline. Copy the answer with one click.
Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate an exponent?
An exponent tells you how many times to multiply the base by itself. So 2⁴ means 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 = 16. For non-whole exponents the calculator uses the power function, which extends this idea to roots and reciprocals.
What does a negative exponent mean?
A negative exponent means the reciprocal of the positive power. For example 2⁻³ equals 1 ÷ 2³ = 1 ÷ 8 = 0.125. The calculator computes this directly, so you can enter negative exponents without rearranging anything.
What is a fractional exponent?
A fractional exponent represents a root. Raising a number to the power 1/2 gives its square root, and to the power 1/3 gives its cube root. So 27^(1/3) = 3. Enter the fraction as a decimal like 0.3333 or a value such as 0.5.
What is anything to the power of zero?
Any non-zero number raised to the power of zero equals 1. This is a rule that keeps the laws of exponents consistent. The case 0⁰ is generally treated as 1 by most calculators, including this one.
Why does a fractional power of a negative number fail?
Roots of negative numbers, such as the square root of −4, are not real numbers, so a fractional exponent of a negative base is undefined in real arithmetic. The calculator flags this rather than returning a meaningless value.
