About the Fuel Cost Calculator

The ByteTools Fuel Cost Calculator estimates how much fuel a journey will use and what it will cost. Enter the trip distance, your vehicle's fuel efficiency and the price of fuel, and it returns the total cost, the amount of fuel used and the cost per mile or kilometre.

It supports both measurement systems: distance in miles or kilometres and efficiency as MPG or litres per 100 km, with the fuel price unit following your choice. That makes it handy for road-trip budgeting, commuting costs and comparing vehicles. Everything is calculated locally in your browser.

Figures are estimates based on the values you enter; real consumption varies with driving style, load, traffic and conditions. Use the result as a planning guide rather than an exact cost.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate the fuel cost of a trip?

Divide the distance by your fuel efficiency to get the fuel used, then multiply by the price per unit of fuel. For example, 300 miles at 30 MPG uses 10 gallons, so at $4 a gallon the trip costs $40. This calculator handles the unit maths for you.

What is the difference between MPG and L/100km?

MPG measures how many miles you travel per gallon, so higher is better. L/100km measures litres used to travel 100 km, so lower is better. This tool accepts either and matches the fuel price to gallons or litres automatically.

How much fuel will I use on my journey?

With MPG, fuel used is the distance in miles divided by your MPG. With L/100km, it is the distance in km divided by 100 and multiplied by the figure. The calculator converts your distance to the right unit before working it out.

Can I calculate the cost of a round trip?

Yes. Tick the return-trip option and the distance is doubled before the fuel and cost are calculated, so you get the full there-and-back figure.

Is my data kept private?

Yes. The calculator runs entirely in your browser with JavaScript, so nothing you enter is uploaded, stored or shared.
