What is the difference between GPX and KML?

GPX is a GPS-exchange format focused on recorded data: waypoints, ordered track points with timestamps and elevation, and planned routes. KML is a visualization format for Google Earth describing placemarks, styles and geometry. Convert to KML when you want to view or present data, keep GPX for editing and re-importing to devices.

Does the converter keep elevation data?

Yes. Elevation from GPX <ele> elements is written into the KML coordinate altitude field for every waypoint and track point. Note that Google Earth clamps features to the ground by default, so the terrain profile you see comes from Earth's own elevation model.

Can I convert a Strava or Garmin export?

Yes. Strava's "Export GPX" files and Garmin Connect exports are standard GPX 1.1 and convert directly. Activity tracks come through as line strings named after the activity, and any course points or waypoints become placemarks.

What happens to tracks with multiple segments?

Each trkseg becomes its own line string, and segments of the same track are grouped in a single KML MultiGeometry placemark. Your track keeps its name and stays one clickable object in Google Earth, with gaps (e.g. GPS dropouts) preserved rather than joined artificially.

Are timestamps preserved in the KML?

No — this converter outputs geometry, names, descriptions and elevation, which is what Google Earth displays for static KML. If you need time animation, keep the original GPX, since GPX remains the richer format for timing data.
