Each material carries a typical bulk density: pea gravel, crushed stone, crusher run, river rock, sand, topsoil and limestone screenings are all included, and the density used is shown alongside the result. An overage allowance covers the compaction that happens once the material is rolled or driven on.

Real densities move with moisture content, grading and quarry source, so the tonnage on your delivery ticket is the authority — treat this as an estimate for ordering. Where a sub-base and a top course use different stone, run the calculator once for each layer and add the two deliveries together.

Frequently asked questions

How many tons of gravel are in a cubic yard?

Most gravels weigh about 1.4 US tons per cubic yard; crushed stone is nearer 1.35 and dense crusher run can reach 1.8. The exact figure depends on the stone, its grading and how wet it is, which is why this calculator lets you pick the material.

How deep should gravel be for a driveway?

A driveway usually wants 4 to 6 inches (10 to 15 cm) of aggregate, often in two layers with a coarse sub-base under a finer top course. Footpaths and garden paths are fine at 2 to 3 inches. Deeper is better on soft ground.

What is the difference between a ton and a tonne?

A US short ton is 2,000 pounds, about 907 kg, while a metric tonne is 1,000 kg. That makes a tonne roughly 10% heavier, so a quote in tonnes and a quote in tons are not directly comparable. This calculator shows both figures.

How much extra gravel should I order for compaction?

Aggregate settles noticeably once it is compacted, so 10% is the usual allowance and 15 to 20% is sensible for a properly rolled sub-base. This tool applies 10% by default and lets you change it.

Is the density used here accurate for my supplier's stone?

The densities are typical published values and are shown in the results so you can see what was applied. Moisture, grading and quarry source all shift them, so if your supplier quotes a density for their product, use that number instead.
