How do you do long division step by step?

Work left to right through the dividend: divide the current digits by the divisor, write the quotient digit on top, multiply it by the divisor, subtract, then bring down the next digit. Repeat until the digits run out. For 221 ÷ 7: 22 ÷ 7 = 3 remainder 1, bring down 1 to make 11, 11 ÷ 7 = 1 remainder 4 — so the answer is 31 remainder 4.

What are the quotient and the remainder?

The quotient is how many whole times the divisor fits into the dividend, and the remainder is what is left over. In 221 ÷ 7 = 31 remainder 4, you can check the result: 31 × 7 + 4 = 221. The remainder is always smaller than the divisor.

How does long division continue past the decimal point?

Append zeros to the dividend after a decimal point and keep the same divide–multiply–subtract cycle, placing a decimal point in the quotient directly above. 221 ÷ 7 continued three places gives 31.571. The decimal-places setting controls how far the tool goes.

How does the calculator handle negative numbers?

The worked layout always uses absolute values, because that is how long division is taught. The sign is applied at the end: a negative divided by a positive gives a negative quotient, and the tool notes this below the layout.

Why does my remainder look different when I use decimals?

With decimal places enabled, the displayed remainder is the leftover at the last digit computed, in units of that decimal place. For 221 ÷ 7 to three places the layout ends with remainder 3, meaning 3 thousandths were still undivided — the exact answer keeps going: 31.571428…
