About the Octal to Decimal Converter

The ByteTools Octal to Decimal Converter turns a base-8 number into its base-10 value and shows exactly how it got there. Alongside the result you get a positional-expansion table: every octal digit multiplied by its power of 8, with the products summed to the final decimal value — the same working a textbook would show.

Input is validated strictly against the octal digit set 0–7, so a stray 8 or 9 is flagged immediately with an explanation rather than silently misread. An optional 0o prefix and negative values are accepted, and arbitrary-precision arithmetic keeps even very long octal values exact, well beyond normal calculator limits.

Like every ByteTools converter, it runs 100% locally in your browser. Nothing you type is uploaded or stored anywhere.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert octal to decimal?

Multiply each octal digit by 8 raised to the power of its position, counting from 0 on the right, then add the products. For example octal 755 is 7×64 + 5×8 + 5×1 = 493. The tool renders this exact working as a table for any number you enter.

Why is 8 not a valid octal digit?

Octal is base 8, so it only has eight digit symbols: 0 through 7. The value eight is written as 10 in octal — one eight and zero ones — just as ten becomes 10 in decimal. If your number contains an 8 or 9, it is not octal.

Where is octal still used today?

The most common place is Unix and Linux file permissions — chmod 755 and umask 022 are octal, with each digit packing three permission bits. Octal also appears in some escape sequences and legacy protocols, though hexadecimal has replaced it almost everywhere else.

Can this converter handle very large octal numbers?

Yes. It uses arbitrary-precision integer arithmetic rather than floating point, so values with dozens or hundreds of digits convert exactly, with no rounding at the 15–16 digit limit ordinary calculators hit.

Is my input sent to a server?

No. The conversion and the step-by-step breakdown are computed entirely in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, logged or stored.
