About the PDF to Text

The ByteTools PDF-to-Text extractor pulls every word out of a PDF and gives it back to you as clean, plain text. It reads the position of each fragment on the page, so lines, spacing and paragraph breaks survive the trip instead of collapsing into one long run-on block.

Extraction happens locally in your browser — the file never leaves your device. That makes it safe for court filings, HR documents, medical letters and anything else you would not paste into an unknown website.

Use it to move a report into a word processor, feed document text into a spreadsheet or an AI prompt, quote a passage without retyping it, or search a long PDF with the tools you already use for plain text.

Frequently asked questions

How do I copy all the text out of a PDF at once?

Drop the file into this tool and the whole document's text appears in one box. Press Copy text to put it on your clipboard, or download it as a .txt file — no page-by-page selecting and no formatting artefacts from a PDF viewer.

Why does my PDF produce no text at all?

Because it is almost certainly a scan. Scanned pages store photographs of paper, not characters, so there is nothing to extract. You need OCR software to recognise the letters in the image first; this tool reads only real text layers.

Does extracting text from a PDF keep the formatting?

It keeps the reading structure — line breaks, paragraph gaps and page order — but not the visual styling. Bold, italics, fonts, colours and columns are dropped, because plain text has no way to represent them.

Is my document uploaded when I extract its text?

No. The PDF is parsed inside your browser by JavaScript and nothing is sent over the network. That means it also works offline once the page has finished loading.

Why are some words run together in the output?

PDFs store text as positioned fragments rather than sentences, so spaces are inferred from the gaps between them. Unusual fonts and tight kerning occasionally hide a gap. A quick find-and-replace in your editor normally clears up the few cases that slip through.
