About the PDF Word Counter

Word counts matter for translation quotes, editing rates, coursework limits and reading estimates, but a PDF will not tell you one. This tool extracts the text layer from every page, groups the fragments back into real lines, and counts words, characters with and without spaces, sentences and paragraphs.

Alongside the totals you get a per-page table, the page with the most words, the average words per page and per sentence, and a reading time based on a words-per-minute figure you can set yourself — 200 is a fair default for adults reading non-fiction.

The document is read entirely in your browser, so a manuscript or a client report is never uploaded. Export the per-page table as CSV if you are quoting on the job.

Frequently asked questions

How do I count the words in a PDF?

Drop the file here and the text layer of every page is read and counted in a couple of seconds. You get totals plus a per-page breakdown, which is more useful than a single number when you are quoting per page.

Why does the count differ from Microsoft Word?

Word counts the source document, including text in boxes, footnotes and headers that may be laid out differently once exported. Differences of a percent or two are normal; a big gap usually means the PDF holds content Word never saw.

Why does my PDF show zero words?

It is almost certainly a scan. Scanned pages are images, so there is no text layer to read and nothing to count. Run the file through OCR first if you need a word count from it.

How accurate is the reading time estimate?

It is a straight division of words by your chosen speed, so it is a rough guide rather than a measurement. Dense technical material reads far slower than 200 words per minute and skimming runs much faster, so adjust the speed to match.
