About the Readability Score Checker
The ByteTools Readability Score Checker rates how easy your writing is to read using two industry-standard formulas: Flesch Reading Ease and the Flesch–Kincaid Grade Level. Paste your text to get both scores alongside the word, sentence and estimated syllable counts they are built from.
Each score comes with a plain-English interpretation band — from 'very easy' to 'very difficult' and an approximate school grade — so you know whether your copy suits a general audience, students or specialists. It is ideal for bloggers, teachers, UX writers and content marketers.
Syllables are estimated with a standard vowel-group heuristic, and everything is calculated locally in your browser with JavaScript. Your text is never uploaded or stored, so drafts and confidential documents stay private.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good Flesch Reading Ease score?
Scores run from 0 to about 100; higher is easier. A score of 60–70 is considered plain English suitable for most web content and roughly an 8th- to 9th-grade reading level. Below 30 is difficult and best reserved for academic or technical audiences.
What does the Flesch–Kincaid Grade Level mean?
It translates readability into a US school grade, so a score of 8 means an average 8th grader should understand the text. Most general audiences are comfortable with content around grade 7 to 9.
How are syllables counted?
Syllables are estimated using a standard heuristic that counts groups of vowels, adjusts for a silent trailing 'e', and ensures every word has at least one syllable. It is an approximation, so scores are close to but not identical to a dictionary count.
How can I improve my readability score?
Shorten your sentences, prefer common short words over long ones, and break large paragraphs up. Fewer words per sentence and fewer syllables per word both push the Reading Ease score higher and the grade level lower.
Is my writing uploaded to calculate the score?
No. All the maths happens in your browser with JavaScript, so nothing is sent to a server. It is safe for unpublished articles, essays and confidential documents.
