How do I resize an image without stretching it?

Keep the 'Lock aspect ratio' checkbox enabled. When you change the width, the height updates automatically in the same proportion (and vice versa), so the picture keeps its original shape instead of looking squashed or stretched.

Does resizing an image reduce its quality?

Making an image smaller loses some detail but usually looks perfectly sharp because pixels are averaged smoothly. Enlarging an image cannot invent new detail, so upscaled photos look softer — avoid enlarging by more than about 150% if quality matters.
