About the SKU Generator

A SKU generator saves you from typing out every variant of every product by hand. Paste your attribute lists — brands, categories, colours, sizes, anything — give each one an abbreviation rule, and this tool crosses them all together. Four brands times three colours times five sizes gives sixty rows, each with its own code built from your template.

The template is plain text with placeholders. Write {brand}-{category}-{colour}-{size}-{seq} and each placeholder is replaced with that attribute's abbreviated value, with {seq} filling in a zero-padded running number you control. Abbreviation rules include first two or three letters, initials of each word, dropping vowels, or leaving the value exactly as typed.

Every finished list is checked for collisions, because two products sharing a SKU is one of the most expensive mistakes in a product catalogue. The whole thing runs in your browser: your product data is never uploaded, and the CSV is written straight to your device.

Frequently asked questions

What is a SKU and how should I structure one?

A SKU is a stock keeping unit, the internal code you use to identify one specific variant. Good ones read left to right from broad to specific — brand, then category, then colour, then size — and end in a number so two similar products can never collide.

How long should a SKU be?

Between eight and sixteen characters suits most catalogues. Short enough to read off a shelf label and type into a till, long enough to encode the attributes that matter. Anything past about twenty characters starts causing errors in warehouses.

Why does the tool warn me about SKU collisions?

Because two different products with the same code will merge in your inventory system, and you will not notice until stock counts go wrong. Collisions usually mean an abbreviation rule is too short — Apple and Apricot both become AP with a two-letter rule.

Should SKUs contain letters, numbers or both?

Both is normal and readable. Avoid characters that some systems treat specially, such as spaces, slashes and quotes. Avoid the letter O next to a zero too, since warehouse staff mistype it constantly.

Can I generate SKUs for thousands of variants at once?

Yes. The tool builds up to 5000 rows in one pass and tells you when your lists cross to more than that. Trim one list, or split the run, and download each batch as CSV to import into your store.
