Unicode code points: 0 · UTF-16 code units: 0 · UTF-8 bytes: 0. The “Characters” figure counts grapheme clusters — one emoji or one accented letter is one character, which is what most platform limits mean.

Type a post above to see the numbers fill in. Limits are hardcoded constants checked in 2026 — nothing is fetched, so this page also works offline. Rows marked with an asterisk are numbers the platform has never published itself; they are the long-standing community consensus rather than a documented figure. X, TikTok, YouTube and Bluesky do publish theirs. Platforms change limits without notice, so confirm anything business-critical in the platform’s own composer.

What is the Social Media Character Counter?

Write a post once and see how it measures up everywhere. This counter checks a single piece of text against the caption, post, bio, title and description limits of X, Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook, TikTok, YouTube, Pinterest, Threads and Bluesky at the same time, with a remaining count and a usage bar for each of them.

  • One post measured against fourteen platform fields at the same time
  • X counted with its weighted rules — links cost 23, emoji count double
  • TikTok counted in UTF-16 units, everywhere else in grapheme clusters
  • Bluesky's 3,000-byte cap checked alongside its 300-character limit
  • Word, line, emoji, link, code point and UTF-8 byte counts shown too
  • Works offline and entirely in-browser — drafts are never uploaded

How to use the Social Media Character Counter

  1. 1

Paste or type the caption, post or bio you are about to publish.

  2. 2

Read the remaining count and usage bar for every platform in the table.

  3. 3

Tick Hide platforms you are over on to focus only on the ones that still fit.

  4. 4

Trim the text until the platforms you care about are inside their limits, then copy it.

About the Social Media Character Counter

Write a post once and see how it measures up everywhere. This counter checks a single piece of text against the caption, post, bio, title and description limits of X, Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook, TikTok, YouTube, Pinterest, Threads and Bluesky at the same time, with a remaining count and a usage bar for each of them.

The platforms do not all count the same thing, so neither does this tool. X is measured with its weighted rules, where every link costs 23 characters and emoji count double. TikTok's API counts UTF-16 units, so an emoji costs two there as well. Everywhere else the count is grapheme clusters, meaning one emoji or accented letter is one character.

Bluesky's separate 3,000-byte cap is checked too, since emoji and non-Latin scripts can trip it well before the 300-character limit does. All limits are hardcoded constants checked in 2026 rather than fetched, and platforms change them without notice. Counting runs 100% locally in your browser, so unpublished drafts are never uploaded.

Frequently asked questions

What is the character limit on an Instagram caption?

An Instagram caption is generally capped at 2,200 characters and a bio at 150. Instagram has never published those figures itself, so they are long-standing community consensus and can change — this counter marks such rows with an asterisk.

Why does my post fit on one platform but not another?

Because the limits differ enormously, from 280 on X to 63,206 on Facebook, and because platforms count differently. A link is 23 characters on X regardless of its real length, and an emoji costs two there and on TikTok but one nearly everywhere else.

Do emoji count as one character or two?

It depends on the platform. This counter treats an emoji as one grapheme cluster for most limits, as two on X, and as two UTF-16 units for TikTok, which mirrors what each platform's own counting rules do to your text.

Are these social media character limits up to date?

They are hardcoded constants checked against each platform's documentation in 2026, not a live feed, which is why the tool also works offline. Platforms change limits without notice, so confirm anything business-critical in the platform's own composer.

Does this tool store what I paste into it?

No. The text is counted in your browser and never leaves your device, with no upload, no server call and no storage. That means embargoed announcements and unpublished drafts stay entirely private.
