takt = net available time ÷ customer demand  ·  stations = ⌈work content ÷ takt⌉  ·  balance efficiency = work content ÷ (stations × takt)

Worked example: an eight-hour shift less 30 minutes of breaks is 450 minutes, or 27,000 seconds. Against demand of 500 units, takt = 27,000 ÷ 500 = 54 seconds per unit. With 200 seconds of work content that needs ⌈200 ÷ 54⌉ = 4 stations, and the line balances at 200 ÷ (4 × 54) = 92.59%, leaving 16 seconds of idle time spread across the four stations each cycle.

Takt is a demand drumbeat, not a target speed: running faster than takt just builds inventory. Most lines deliberately set cycle time a few percent below takt to absorb variation. The station split shown here is the theoretical minimum — a real balance also has to respect task precedence, tooling and ergonomics, so treat the station count as a floor. How do you calculate takt time?

Divide net available production time by customer demand for the same period. An eight-hour shift less 30 minutes of breaks is 450 minutes, or 27,000 seconds; against demand of 500 units that is a takt of 54 seconds per unit — one finished unit must leave the line every 54 seconds.

What is the difference between takt time and cycle time?

Takt comes from the customer; cycle time comes from the line. Takt is how often you must finish a unit to meet demand, cycle time is how often you actually do. Cycle time slower than takt means missing demand; most lines deliberately run a few percent faster than takt to absorb variation.

How many workstations do I need?

Round up work content ÷ takt. With 200 seconds of hands-on work and a 54-second takt that is four stations, and the line balances at 200 ÷ (4 × 54) = 92.6%. The theoretical minimum is a floor — a real balance also has to respect task precedence, tooling and ergonomics.

What is a good line balance efficiency?

Above about 85% is generally considered well balanced for manual assembly. Low efficiency means one station is doing much more than the others, so the whole line waits on it. Splitting or moving a single task is often enough to recover several points.

Should breaks be subtracted from available time?

Yes — takt uses net available time, so breaks, meals, scheduled meetings, cleaning and planned changeovers all come out first. Leaving them in produces a takt that looks achievable on paper and is not achievable on the floor.
