Frequently asked questions

What are sin, cos and tan?

In a right triangle, sine is opposite over hypotenuse, cosine is adjacent over hypotenuse, and tangent is opposite over adjacent. On the unit circle the definitions extend to any angle: cos θ and sin θ are simply the x and y coordinates of the angle's point.

What is a reference angle?

The acute angle between the terminal side of your angle and the x-axis, always between 0° and 90°. For 210° the reference angle is 30°, so sin 210° has the same magnitude as sin 30° = 1/2, just with a negative sign because 210° lies in quadrant III.

Why is tan 90 degrees undefined?

Tangent is sine divided by cosine, and cos 90° = 0 — division by zero has no value. As the angle approaches 90° the tangent grows without bound, positive from one side and negative from the other, so no single value can be assigned.

What are the exact values of the special angles?

The classics are sin 30° = 1/2, sin 45° = √2/2, sin 60° = √3/2, with cosine running the same list in reverse, and tan 45° = 1. They come from the 30-60-90 and 45-45-90 triangles, and this calculator prints them automatically whenever your angle is a multiple of 30° or 45°.

What is the range of the inverse trig functions?

By convention arcsin and arctan return angles from −90° to 90°, and arccos returns 0° to 180°, so every input has exactly one answer. Remember there are infinitely many angles with the same sine — the inverse function gives you the principal one.
