Unlock PDF (Remove Password)
Open a password-protected PDF with the password you already have and save an unprotected copy, with no printing or copying restrictions left on it.
You need the document’s open password. This tool does not guess or crack passwords — it opens a file you can already open and writes an unprotected copy. Pages come back as images, so the text is no longer selectable or searchable.
What is the Unlock PDF (Remove Password)?
A protected PDF asks for a password every time you open it, and often refuses to print or let you copy a line of text even after you are in.
- Handles the standard PDF security handler: RC4 40/128-bit, AES-128 and AES-256
- Removes owner restrictions on printing, copying and editing as well
- Four output resolutions from 96 to 300 DPI, with a quality control
- Clear warning that pages come back as images, not selectable text
- Runs entirely in the browser — the file and password never leave your device
How to use the Unlock PDF (Remove Password)
- 1
Drop the protected PDF onto the upload area.
- 2
Type the document's open password into the password box. Leave it blank if the file opens without one and you only want the restrictions gone.
- 3
Pick an output resolution — 150 DPI reads well on screen, 300 DPI is right for printing.
- 4
Click Unlock PDF and wait while each page is rebuilt.
- 5
Download the unprotected copy.
About the Unlock PDF (Remove Password)
A protected PDF asks for a password every time you open it, and often refuses to print or let you copy a line of text even after you are in. If you know that password, this tool opens the file, redraws every page and writes out a clean copy with no encryption and no permission flags attached.
The whole job runs in your browser using pdf.js and pdf-lib. Your document is never uploaded, so a confidential contract or a bank statement never leaves your laptop. That also means the tool keeps working with the tab open and the network disconnected.
Be clear about what this is not: it does not guess, crack or bypass a password you do not have. You must be able to open the file already. And because each page is re-rendered as a picture, the text in the copy is no longer selectable or searchable — that is the trade-off for stripping the security handler cleanly.
Frequently asked questions
Can this tool unlock a PDF without the password?
No. It opens a document you can already open and writes an unprotected copy. There is no password guessing or cracking here, and a modern AES-256 PDF cannot be broken in a browser tab anyway.
Why is the text no longer selectable after unlocking?
Encrypted content streams cannot simply be copied into a new file, so every page is rendered and re-embedded as an image. That reliably removes the security handler, but it turns the text into pixels. If you need selectable text, use the original file with its password instead.
What is the difference between a user password and an owner password?
The user password (or open password) is the one that stops the file opening at all. The owner password only sets permissions — no printing, no copying. This tool clears both, but you still need the user password if the file has one.
Is it legal to remove a PDF password?
It depends entirely on your rights to the document. Removing protection from your own files, or files you have permission to work with, is normal office housekeeping. Doing it to bypass someone else's restrictions may not be, so check first.
Does the file get uploaded to a server?
No. The PDF is read, decrypted and rebuilt by JavaScript inside your own browser tab. Nothing is transmitted, and neither the file nor the password is stored anywhere.
