What is the VIN Validator & Decoder?

The ByteTools VIN Validator checks a Vehicle Identification Number using the check-digit rule from ISO 3779 and 49 CFR 565: each letter is transliterated to a number, the seventeen positions are multiplied by the weights 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 10, 0, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, and the sum modulo 11 must equal position nine, with a remainder of ten written as X.

About the VIN Validator & Decoder

The ByteTools VIN Validator checks a Vehicle Identification Number using the check-digit rule from ISO 3779 and 49 CFR 565: each letter is transliterated to a number, the seventeen positions are multiplied by the weights 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 10, 0, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, and the sum modulo 11 must equal position nine, with a remainder of ten written as X.

Beyond the checksum it decodes the parts of the VIN that every manufacturer shares: the World Manufacturer Identifier and the region and country it points to, the model-year code with both years its 30-year cycle can mean, the assembly plant character and the sequential serial. It also flags a small-volume manufacturer, and rejects the letters I, O and Q that a VIN can never contain.

Frequently asked questions

How is a VIN check digit calculated?

Letters become numbers (A–H are 1–8, J–R are 1–9, S–Z are 2–9), each position is multiplied by a fixed weight, the products are added, and the total is divided by 11. The remainder is the check digit, written as X when it comes to ten.

Why does my VIN fail the check digit test?

Most often a character was mistyped — a 0 read as an O, or a 1 as an I. It can also mean the vehicle is pre-1981 or was built outside North America, since the check digit is only mandatory for vehicles sold in the US and Canada.

What year is my car from its VIN?

Position 10 holds the model-year code, but it repeats on a 30-year cycle, so a letter A could mean 1980 or 2010. As a rule of thumb, a digit at position 7 points to the earlier cycle and a letter to the later one, which this tool applies for you.

Why are the letters I, O and Q never used in a VIN?

They are excluded by the standard because they are too easily confused with the digits 1 and 0 when a VIN is read off a stamped plate or a faded sticker. Any VIN containing them is a transcription error.

Can this tool tell me the make and model?

Only the country and the manufacturer prefix. Positions 4 to 8 are defined privately by each manufacturer, so decoding a model or trim needs a licensed VIN database — which this offline page deliberately does not use.
