This is a field estimate, not a measurement and not a diagnosis of anything. A true VO₂max needs a graded exercise test with a metabolic cart. Field equations typically sit within about 10–15% of the laboratory value for the population they were fitted on, and further out for anyone at the edges of it — the resting-heart-rate method in particular is the crudest of the three and is easily off by 15% or more. Maximal and near-maximal effort tests carry real risk: do not attempt the Cooper run if you have a heart condition, chest pain, uncontrolled blood pressure, or you are new to hard exercise. About the VO2 Max Calculator

What is a good VO2 max?

It depends heavily on age and sex. Using the Cooper Institute norms, a man in his thirties is rated good from about 41 ml/kg/min and excellent from about 45; for a woman in her thirties the same ratings start around 31.5 and 35.7. Trained endurance athletes commonly exceed 60, and the highest laboratory values ever recorded sit around 90.

How do you calculate VO2 max from the Cooper test?

Run as far as you can in exactly 12 minutes on a flat track, then apply VO2 max = (distance in metres − 504.9) ÷ 44.73. Covering 2,400 m gives (2400 − 504.9) ÷ 44.73, which is about 42.4 ml/kg/min.

How accurate are VO2 max field tests?

They are estimates with real error bars. Field equations typically land within about 10 to 15 percent of a laboratory measurement for the population they were fitted on, and further out for anyone outside it. The resting heart-rate method is the crudest of the three — it uses no exercise data at all and can easily be 15 percent or more off. Pacing, motivation, terrain, heat and how rested you were all move the result.

Can I estimate VO2 max without running?

Yes. The Rockport test only requires walking one mile as briskly as you can, which suits people who cannot or should not run, and the resting heart-rate method requires no exercise whatsoever — though it is correspondingly less reliable.

Is a smartwatch VO2 max estimate accurate?

It is generally in the same ballpark as these field tests, since watches use similar heart-rate-and-pace regressions internally. Both are estimates rather than measurements, and both are far more useful for tracking your own trend over months than for comparing yourself with someone else.

How can I improve my VO2 max?

Consistent aerobic training raises it, with a mix of high-volume easy work and shorter intervals near maximum being the usual recommendation. Improvements of 10 to 20 percent over a few months are common in untrained people, and much smaller in the already well-trained. Build load gradually and get medical clearance first if you have any cardiovascular concern.
