Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate the volume of a cylinder?

Multiply pi by the radius squared, then by the height: V = πr²h. A cylinder with a 2 m radius and 5 m height holds π × 4 × 5 ≈ 62.83 cubic metres. The calculator applies this formula and shows it under the result.

What is the formula for the volume of a sphere?

A sphere's volume is V = (4/3)πr³, where r is the radius. For a radius of 3, that gives (4/3)π × 27 ≈ 113.1 cubic units. Doubling the radius multiplies the volume by eight, because volume grows with the cube of the radius.

How do I convert a volume to litres or gallons?

One cubic metre is exactly 1,000 litres, and one US gallon is exactly 3.785411784 litres. The calculator does this automatically: whatever unit you measure in, it converts the result to litres, US gallons, cubic feet, cubic yards and cubic metres.

What is the volume of a capsule shape?

A capsule is a cylinder with a hemisphere on each end, so its volume is the cylinder part plus a full sphere: V = πr²(4r/3 + a), where a is the length of the straight cylinder section. Enter the radius and the cylinder length and the tool sums both parts.

Does this calculator work for tanks and containers?

Yes, as long as the container matches one of the shapes — most tanks are cylinders or boxes. Measure the inside dimensions, choose the shape, and read the capacity in litres or gallons. For partially filled tanks, use the fill height instead of the full height.
