These are the Ashwell boundary values that most waist-to-height screening advice is built on. Because the ratio is a pure proportion, the same three boundaries apply to adults of any height, and roughly from age five upwards — unlike BMI, which needs separate reference charts for children.

Does the ratio work if I am very muscular or pregnant?
Not reliably. Boundary values were derived from general adult populations and are not validated for pregnancy, and a very muscular torso can push the ratio up without the fat pattern the measure is designed to detect. Treat those results with real caution.
How much can one tape measurement vary?
Easily a centimetre or two, depending on tape placement, tension, posture and whether you have just eaten. If you are tracking change, measure the same way at the same time of day and watch the trend across weeks rather than reacting to a single reading.
