Field studs = (wall length ÷ on-centre spacing) + 1, which is the familiar "three-quarters of the wall length plus one" at 16 in centres — a 40 ft wall takes 31. Each corner adds two studs for a three-stud California corner, each opening gets two kings and two jacks, and cripples are counted above every header and below every window sill. Headers are the rough opening plus a jack each side. Board feet use the nominal size: thickness × width × length in feet ÷ 12. Header sizing and bearing are code matters — check your span tables.

Frequently asked questions

How many studs do I need for a 40 foot wall?

At 16 in centres, (40 ft ÷ 1.333 ft) + 1 = 31 field studs, before adding corners, T-intersections and the kings, jacks and cripples around openings. At 24 in centres the same wall takes 21. This calculator adds all the extras on top for you.

How do you calculate studs at 16 inch centres?

Divide the wall length in feet by 1.333 and add one — or equivalently multiply by 0.75 and add one. The extra stud is the one that closes the last bay. Openings, corners and intersections are counted separately, which is why a real wall always needs more than the field count.

How many studs are in a corner?

Three in a conventional California corner, so each corner adds two studs beyond the field count. A T-intersection where a partition meets the wall needs two backing studs. Advanced framing uses ladder blocking or drywall clips instead, which saves lumber and leaves room for insulation.

How long should a header be over a door?

The rough opening width plus a jack stud on each side, so a 3 ft rough opening takes a header 3 ft 3 in long with 1 1/2 in jacks. How deep that header needs to be is a span-table question that depends on the load above it and the opening width.

How do I calculate board feet for framing lumber?

Nominal thickness in inches times nominal width in inches times length in feet, divided by 12. A 2 by 4 eight feet long is 5.33 board feet. This calculator totals the studs, plates, headers, sills and blocking and reports the board feet for the whole wall.
