How much water should I drink a day?

A common estimate is 30 to 40 millilitres per kilogram of body weight, which for a 70 kg adult is roughly 2.1 to 2.8 litres. The US National Academies suggest total daily water of about 3.7 litres for men and 2.7 litres for women, but that includes water from food and other drinks, which typically supplies about 20 percent of the total.

How accurate is the 35 ml per kg rule?

It is a rough heuristic, not a validated clinical formula. Real requirements swing widely with sweat rate, air temperature, humidity, altitude, diet, medication and kidney function, and none of that is captured by body weight alone. Use the number as a rough daily anchor and let thirst and urine colour do the fine-tuning.

Does coffee or tea count toward water intake?

Yes. The mild diuretic effect of moderate caffeine does not offset the fluid in the drink, so tea, coffee, milk and most soft drinks contribute to your total. Water and unsweetened drinks are still the better default for other reasons.

Can you drink too much water?

Yes. Drinking far more than the kidneys can excrete — very roughly a litre an hour sustained — can dilute blood sodium and cause hyponatraemia, which is rare but genuinely dangerous. Endurance athletes are the group most often affected. Spread intake through the day rather than forcing large volumes at once.

How much extra water do I need when exercising?

Sweat losses commonly run between 0.5 and 2 litres per hour depending on intensity and heat. This calculator adds 500 ml per 30 minutes as a middle-of-the-road allowance; weighing yourself before and after a session is the accurate way to measure your own sweat rate.
