About the 401(k) Calculator

The ByteTools 401(k) Calculator projects what your workplace retirement account could be worth by the time you retire. Enter your salary, the percentage you contribute, your employer's match and its cap, an expected annual return and a yearly raise, and the tool compounds every contribution month by month until your chosen retirement age.

It is built for anyone deciding how much to put into a 401(k), or wondering how much free money they leave on the table by contributing below the match cap. The year-by-year table separates your own contributions from the employer match and from investment growth, so you can see which part is doing the work.

All the arithmetic runs entirely in your browser — your salary and balance are never uploaded, stored or sent anywhere. Investment returns are assumed to be steady, which real markets are not, so treat every figure as a planning estimate rather than financial advice.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my 401(k) at retirement?

Take each year's contributions plus the employer match, compound the running balance at your expected return, then repeat until retirement age. This calculator does it with monthly compounding and applies your annual raise so contributions grow with your salary.

How does an employer 401(k) match work?

A typical match is expressed as a rate up to a cap, such as "50% of the first 6% of salary". If you earn $60,000 and contribute 6%, you put in $3,600 and your employer adds 50% of that, or $1,800. Contributing above the cap earns no extra match.

Should I contribute at least enough to get the full match?

Almost always, yes. The match is an immediate return on the money you put in, and no investment reliably beats that. Set your contribution percent to at least the cap shown in your plan documents before considering other accounts.

What return should I assume for a 401(k)?

There is no correct answer, which is why the rate is yours to type. Many people model a long-run diversified return somewhere in the 5–8% range and then re-run the projection with a lower figure to see how sensitive the outcome is.

Does this calculator account for taxes and inflation?

No. It projects a nominal balance before withdrawal taxes and without adjusting for inflation, so the future number buys less than the same number today. Lower your expected return by your inflation assumption if you want a rough real-terms figure.

Is my salary information kept private?

Completely. Every calculation happens in your browser and nothing is transmitted or saved, so your salary, balance and contribution details never leave your device.
