What is the difference between AAC and M4A files?

They contain the same codec: AAC. A .aac file is a raw ADTS stream with no container, while .m4a wraps AAC in an MP4 container with metadata and seeking support. Raw .aac files are what this tool is built for; we have a separate M4A to WAV converter too.

Does converting AAC to WAV lose quality?

No further quality is lost — the AAC is decoded exactly and stored uncompressed. But WAV cannot restore what AAC encoding originally discarded; the WAV simply preserves the current sound losslessly from here on.

Why will my .aac file not play in my media player?

Raw ADTS streams lack the container index many players expect, so seeking and duration detection fail. Converting to WAV (or M4A) gives the audio a proper structure that every player understands.
