About the Audio Pitch Changer

The Audio Pitch Changer shifts the pitch of a song or recording up or down by up to 12 semitones (a full octave) while keeping the playback speed the same. Move a backing track into your vocal range, transpose a song for a different instrument, or create chipmunk and deep-voice effects.

It works by resampling the audio to raise or lower the pitch, then time-stretching it back to the original tempo — the standard ffmpeg technique of an asetrate shift corrected by atempo. Each semitone is an exact 2^(1/12) frequency ratio, the same spacing used on a piano.

Processing is 100% local in your browser via WebAssembly ffmpeg. Your audio is never uploaded, so unreleased demos and practice recordings stay on your device. Larger shifts introduce more audible artifacts — a few semitones either way stays very natural.

Frequently asked questions

Does changing the pitch also change the speed?

No. The tool first shifts the pitch by resampling, which would normally change the speed, then applies an exact tempo correction so the file ends up at its original duration with only the pitch changed.

How many semitones can I shift without it sounding weird?

Shifts of 1–4 semitones usually sound natural on full songs. Beyond about 5–7 semitones, voices start to sound noticeably processed, and a full octave is best treated as a creative effect rather than a transparent transposition.

What is a semitone exactly?

A semitone is the smallest step in Western music — the distance between two adjacent piano keys. Each semitone multiplies the frequency by the twelfth root of 2 (about 1.0595), so 12 semitones doubles the frequency, which is one octave.

Can I use this to change a song's key for karaoke?

Yes — that is one of the most common uses. Shift the track down a few semitones to bring a song into a more comfortable range, or up if the original is too low for your voice.

Is my audio uploaded to a server?

No. The pitch shift runs entirely in your browser using WebAssembly ffmpeg. Nothing is uploaded, and the tool works offline once the engine has loaded.
