What does LUFS mean?
LUFS (Loudness Units relative to Full Scale) measures perceived loudness rather than raw signal peaks. Streaming services and broadcasters use it to keep playback consistent — for example Spotify normalizes to about −14 LUFS and EBU broadcast standards target −23 LUFS.
Which target should I choose?
Use −14 LUFS for music going to streaming platforms, −16 LUFS for podcasts and spoken word (the common recommendation for stereo podcasts), and −23 LUFS if you are delivering to European broadcast specifications. When unsure, −16 LUFS is a safe, comfortable level for voice.
What is the difference between normalization and compression?
Loudness normalization applies one measured gain adjustment so the whole file hits a target level, preserving the original dynamics. Compression continuously changes the gain, making quiet parts louder and loud parts quieter. The dynamic mode here behaves more like gentle automatic compression.
Will normalizing cause clipping or distortion?
No. The loudnorm filter limits true peaks to −1.5 dBTP as part of the process, which is the headroom streaming services recommend so that lossy encoding does not push peaks into distortion.
