About the AVIF to JPG Converter

This converter turns .avif images into standard JPEG files that open in every photo viewer, editor and office application ever made. Upload an AVIF, pick the JPEG quality, and download the converted file in seconds.

AVIF is increasingly what you get when saving images from modern websites, but plenty of software still can't open it — older Photoshop versions, Windows photo viewers without codecs, and most printing services. Converting to JPG solves that instantly.

Decoding and re-encoding happen entirely in your browser; the image is never uploaded. If your browser is too old to decode AVIF at all, the tool detects it and tells you exactly what to do.

Frequently asked questions

Why won't my AVIF file open in Photoshop or Windows Photos?

AVIF is a young format (2019) and many applications haven't added decoders — Photoshop only gained native support recently, and Windows needs the AV1 codec extension. Converting the file to JPG makes it compatible with everything immediately.

Which browsers can convert AVIF files?

Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari 16+ all decode AVIF, so this tool works in any of them. If you are on an older browser that can't decode the file, you will see a clear error asking you to update or switch browsers.

Does AVIF to JPG conversion lose quality?

There is a small loss because JPEG re-compresses the decoded image, but at quality 85 or higher it is imperceptible for photos. The bigger change is file size: the JPG will usually be noticeably larger than the compact AVIF.

What happens to transparency in an AVIF when converting to JPG?

JPEG has no alpha channel, so transparent areas are filled with white during conversion. If you need transparency preserved, convert the AVIF to PNG or WebP instead.

Where do AVIF files come from?

Performance-optimized websites serve AVIF because it is about half the size of JPEG — so right-click-saving images from modern sites often gives you .avif files. Phones and CDNs like Cloudflare and Netlify also generate them automatically.
