Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate how much baseboard I need?
Add up the room perimeter — for a rectangle that is 2 × (length + width) — then subtract the width of each doorway. A 14 by 12 ft room has a 52 ft perimeter, so with two 3 ft doorways you need 46 ft of baseboard, which becomes 50.6 ft with a 10% cut allowance, or five 12 ft lengths.
Do you subtract doors when measuring baseboard?
Yes for baseboard, shoe moulding and chair rail, because the trim dies into the door casing. No for crown moulding or picture rail, which run continuously along the ceiling line past every doorway. This calculator applies the right rule automatically for the trim type you pick.
How much extra trim should I buy?
Ten per cent is the usual cut-waste allowance, rising to 15% in a room with lots of short returns, alcoves or angled walls. Mitres consume length, offcuts rarely fit the next wall, and one badly cut piece at the end of the job means another trip to the store.
Should inside corners be coped or mitred?
Coping is more forgiving on inside corners because rooms are rarely square and a coped joint stays tight when the wall moves. Outside corners have to be mitred. The calculator counts both so you know how many of each cut you are facing before you start.
What is a scarf joint in trim work?
It is the angled joint where two lengths meet along a single wall that is longer than the stock. Cutting it at 45 degrees rather than square hides the seam and lets the joint move without opening up. This tool counts one wherever a run needs more than one length.
