How to Calculate Your Exact Age in Years, Months and Days

Your exact age is the number of complete years, months and days between your date of birth and a chosen date β€” counting full calendar units, not just dividing days by 365. That distinction matters for forms, eligibility checks and settling debates about who is older. The Age Calculator works it out to the day, handles leap years correctly, and also converts your age into total months, weeks, days and hours.

Why "how old am I" is trickier than it looks

A rough age is easy, but an exact one has to respect that months have different lengths and that leap years add a day every four years. People need this precision more often than you'd think: exam and job applications that demand your age on a specific cut-off date, visa and retirement eligibility, working out the gap between two people's ages, or simply answering the perennial "exactly how old am I?" question. Doing it by hand invites off-by-one errors around month ends and February.

How to calculate your age in your browser

  1. Select your date of birth in the first field.
  2. Optionally change the "as of" date β€” it defaults to today, but you can set any past or future date.
  3. Read your exact age in years, months and days.
  4. Check the totals β€” months, weeks, days and hours β€” and the countdown to your next birthday.

One age, many ways to express it

The same lifespan can be stated in several units, which is useful for different situations. Here's how a single age breaks down across the formats the tool provides.

FormatBest used for
Years, months, daysForms, eligibility, everyday answers
Total monthsBaby and toddler milestones
Total weeksPregnancy and short-term tracking
Total days / hoursFun facts and milestone celebrations
Days to next birthdayCountdowns and planning

Because the tool uses real calendar dates rather than an average year length, every leap day between the two dates is counted, so the day totals are exact rather than approximate.

Frequently asked questions

How is exact age calculated?

It counts completed calendar units: full years since birth, then full months since your last birthday, then the leftover days. Someone born 15 March 2000 is exactly 26 years, 3 months and 19 days old on 4 July 2026.

How does it handle leap years?

It works with real dates, so 29 February and varying month lengths are handled automatically. A person born on a leap day sees the countdown run to the next actual 29 February.

How many days old am I?

For a rough figure multiply your years by 365.25, but for the exact count let the calculator subtract your birth date from the target date in whole days, including every leap day in between.

Can I find my age on a past or future date?

Yes. Set the "as of" date to any day β€” an exam cut-off, a historical date, or a future milestone β€” and the tool reports your exact age on that day. This is exactly how eligibility ages are checked.

Why do age calculators sometimes disagree?

The years and total days always match, but the months-and-days remainder depends on whether months are counted from your birth day or from month ends. This tool uses the common convention of completed months since your last birthday.
