About the Book Page Count Calculator

Printers price on page count, so a self-publisher needs that number long before the interior is typeset. This calculator works it out from typography rather than a rule of thumb: characters per line come from the text width divided by the point size and the average glyph width, and lines per page come from the text height divided by the leading.

Set the trim size, the inner gutter and outer margins, the top and bottom margins, the font size and the line spacing, and it reports characters per line, lines per page, words per page and the body-text pages that follow. Front and back matter are added on top, then the total is rounded up to an even count.

Frequently asked questions

How many pages will my book be?

It depends on the trim size, margins, font size and leading far more than on the word count alone. As a rough anchor, an 80,000-word novel set at 11 pt on a 6 by 9 inch page usually lands somewhere around 280 to 320 pages including front and back matter.

How many words are on a page of a 6 by 9 inch book?

Typically 300 to 400 words, depending on the typeface, the point size and how generous the margins are. This calculator reports the exact figure for the settings you enter, along with the characters per line and lines per page behind it.

Why is my page count always even?

Books are printed on large sheets that are folded and trimmed, so pages come in pairs and the interior count is always even. The calculator adds one page when your total comes out odd, which is what the printer would do anyway.

Does font size change the page count?

Substantially. Going from 11 pt to 12 pt cuts both the characters that fit on a line and the number of lines on the page, and the two effects compound, so a single point can add a noticeable number of pages and change your print cost.

How accurate is this estimate?

It is a typographic estimate, not a typesetting run, so expect the real book to come in slightly higher. Chapter openers that start halfway down a page, part titles, blank verso pages and images all add pages that no formula can predict.
