Contribution Margin Calculator
Work out contribution margin per unit, CM ratio, break-even units and the volume needed for a target profit — with a weighted multi-product sales mix.
Columns: name, selling price per unit, variable cost per unit, share of unit sales (%), contribution margin per unit.
| Product | Price | Variable cost | CM / unit | CM ratio | Mix | Break-even units |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard plan | $100.00 | $60.00 | $40.00 | 40.0% | 100.0% | 12,500 |
Contribution margin per unit is selling price minus variable cost; the CM ratio is that margin as a share of price. Break-even units are fixed costs ÷ contribution margin, and units for a target profit are (fixed costs + target) ÷ contribution margin. With several products the tool uses the weighted-average contribution margin — each product’s CM multiplied by its share of unit sales — which is only valid while the mix holds. Operating leverage at your planned volume is 6.00×. Everything is computed in your browser and nothing is uploaded. Estimates only, not financial advice.
What is the Contribution Margin Calculator?
Contribution margin is the part of each sale left over after the variable cost of making that sale, and it is the number that decides whether volume helps you or hurts you.
- Contribution margin per unit and contribution margin ratio
- Break-even units and break-even revenue from fixed costs
- Units and revenue required for any target profit
- Multi-product table with weighted-average CM by sales mix
- Margin of safety and operating leverage at your planned volume
- Warns when the mix does not total 100% or the margin is negative
How to use the Contribution Margin Calculator
- 1
Enter your total fixed costs for the period, a target profit and the unit volume you plan to sell.
- 2
Add a row for each product with its selling price, variable cost per unit and share of unit sales.
- 3
Read the contribution margin per unit and CM ratio for each row in the results table.
- 4
Check break-even units, break-even revenue and the volume needed to hit your target profit.
- 5
Adjust price or variable cost and watch margin of safety move before you commit to a price.
About the Contribution Margin Calculator
Contribution margin is the part of each sale left over after the variable cost of making that sale, and it is the number that decides whether volume helps you or hurts you. This calculator takes a selling price and a variable cost per unit and returns the margin per unit, the margin as a share of price, and how many units you must sell before fixed costs are covered.
It handles more than one product. Add a row for each item with its share of unit sales and the tool computes the weighted-average contribution margin, then splits the break-even volume back across the products in that mix. It also reports margin of safety and operating leverage at the volume you plan to sell.
Everything runs inside your browser. Your prices, costs and volumes are never uploaded, stored or sent to a server, so it is safe to model real numbers from a live product line. These are estimates for planning, not financial advice.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between contribution margin and gross profit?
Gross profit subtracts cost of goods sold, which usually includes some fixed production costs. Contribution margin subtracts only genuinely variable costs — materials, commission, payment fees, shipping. That makes contribution margin the right number for break-even and pricing decisions, while gross profit is the reporting figure.
How do you calculate break-even units?
Divide total fixed costs by the contribution margin per unit. If fixed costs are 500,000 and each unit contributes 40, you break even at 12,500 units. Add your target profit to the fixed costs to find the volume that earns it.
How does contribution margin work with several products?
You weight each product's margin by its share of unit sales to get a weighted-average contribution margin, then divide fixed costs by that. It only holds while the mix holds — sell more of the low-margin item and your real break-even moves higher than the calculation says.
What is a good contribution margin ratio?
It varies enormously: software often sits above 80%, manufacturing between 20% and 40%, grocery retail lower still. What matters is whether the ratio covers your fixed costs at a volume you can actually sell, which is exactly what the break-even figure tells you.
What does margin of safety mean?
It is how far sales can fall from your planned volume before you hit break-even, shown as a percentage. A 20% margin of safety means you could lose a fifth of your volume and still cover costs. A low figure means small demand swings push you into a loss.
