About the Markup Calculator
The ByteTools Markup Calculator turns a cost and a markup percentage into the selling price you should charge. Enter the cost of an item and the markup you want to add, and it instantly shows the selling price, the profit per unit and the profit margin that markup produces.
It is built for retailers, resellers, makers and freelancers setting prices with confidence. Because markup and margin are easy to confuse, the tool shows both, so you can see that a given markup on cost translates into a different-looking margin on the sale price.
All calculations run locally in your browser with nothing uploaded, so your costs and prices stay private. Results are estimates to guide pricing and are not financial advice.
Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate markup?
Markup is the amount added to cost, expressed as a percentage of that cost. To find the selling price, multiply the cost by (1 + markup ÷ 100). A 50% markup on a $20 cost gives 20 × 1.5 = $30, for a $10 profit. This calculator does that instantly.
What is the difference between markup and margin?
Markup is profit as a percentage of cost, while margin is profit as a percentage of the selling price. A 50% markup on a $20 cost gives a $30 price and a $10 profit — that is a 33.3% margin. Markup is always the larger of the two numbers for the same profit.
How do I convert markup to margin?
Margin equals markup ÷ (100 + markup), times 100. So a 50% markup is 50 ÷ 150 × 100 = 33.3% margin. This tool shows the margin automatically whenever you enter a markup, so you do not have to do the conversion yourself.
What markup should I use for my products?
It depends on your industry, costs and competition — retail markups range from a few percent on groceries to well over 100% on some goods. Pick a markup that covers your overheads and target profit, then check the resulting price and margin look reasonable for your market.
Are my pricing figures private?
Yes. All calculations run in your browser and nothing is transmitted, so your costs, markups and prices remain completely confidential.
