How do you calculate a cube root?

The cube root of x is the number that gives x when multiplied by itself three times. For perfect cubes you can factorise: 343 = 7 × 7 × 7, so ³√343 = 7. For everything else the calculator uses the computer's cube-root function, accurate to about 15 digits.

Can you take the cube root of a negative number?

Yes. Odd roots of negative numbers are real and negative, because an odd number of negative factors multiplies to a negative. So ³√(−27) = −3, since (−3) × (−3) × (−3) = −27. Only even roots of negatives — like square roots — fail to be real.

What is a perfect cube?
