About the Easter Date Calculator

Easter is the one holiday that refuses to sit still: it is the Sunday after the first ecclesiastical full moon on or after 21 March, which can put it anywhere between 22 March and 25 April. This calculator applies the Anonymous Gregorian computus to give you Easter Sunday for any year from 1583 onwards, and the Julian computus for the Orthodox date.

From that one date it derives the whole movable calendar around it. Septuagesima, Shrove Tuesday, Ash Wednesday, Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Ascension Day, Pentecost, Trinity Sunday and Corpus Christi are all fixed offsets from Easter, so once you know the Sunday you know the rest of the year's church calendar.

Frequently asked questions

When is Easter 2026?

Western Easter Sunday falls on 5 April 2026, and Orthodox Easter falls a week later on 12 April 2026. Ash Wednesday that year is 18 February, Good Friday is 3 April and Pentecost is 24 May.

How is the date of Easter calculated?

Easter is the first Sunday after the ecclesiastical full moon that falls on or after 21 March. That moon comes from a fixed 19-year table rather than from an actual observation, so the whole thing reduces to integer arithmetic that any two people will agree on.

Why do Orthodox and Western Easter fall on different days?

Orthodox churches still run the computus on the Julian calendar, which now trails the Gregorian by 13 days, and they use a slightly older moon table. The two dates coincide in some years and differ by one, four or five weeks in others.

What is the earliest and latest Easter can be?

In the Gregorian computus Easter can never fall before 22 March or after 25 April. Both extremes are rare: the next 25 April Easter is in 2038, and a 22 March Easter will not happen again until 2285.

How many days before Easter is Ash Wednesday?

Ash Wednesday is 46 days before Easter Sunday. That is the 40 days of Lent plus the six Sundays inside it, which are not counted as fast days. Palm Sunday is seven days before Easter and Good Friday two.

Does this work for years before 1583?

No, and deliberately so. The Gregorian calendar reform took effect in October 1582, so the Gregorian computus only has meaning from 1583 onwards. Entering an earlier year shows an explanation rather than a misleading date.
