Showing the first 120 of 656 emoji — search to narrow the list.

Shortcode names follow the widely shared Slack / Discord / GitHub convention, so most codes work in all three. Custom emoji uploaded to a specific workspace or server are not in any public list and are left untouched. Conversion happens entirely in your browser — nothing is uploaded.

What is the Emoji Shortcode Converter?

Slack, Discord and GitHub all write emoji as a colon-wrapped name, such as rocket or tada between colons, but plenty of other places do not.

  • Two-way conversion between colon-wrapped shortcode names and real emoji
  • Several hundred common Slack, Discord and GitHub names, aliases included
  • Unrecognised shortcodes left untouched and listed so typos stand out
  • Searchable browse list with a copy button on every entry
  • Counts of converted, unrecognised and total output characters
  • Entirely in-browser — no upload, and it still works offline

How to use the Emoji Shortcode Converter

  1. 1

Choose a direction: shortcodes to emoji, or emoji to shortcodes.

  2. 2

Paste your text, or press Load an example to see how the conversion behaves.

  3. 3

Check the unrecognised list for typos in any shortcode that was left alone.

  4. 4

Copy the converted text, or search the list to copy a single emoji or code.

About the Emoji Shortcode Converter

Slack, Discord and GitHub all write emoji as a colon-wrapped name, such as rocket or tada between colons, but plenty of other places do not. A shortcode pasted somewhere that does not understand it simply sits there as literal text. This converter swaps shortcodes for real emoji, and converts real emoji back into shortcode form when you need the name instead.

The built-in map covers several hundred of the most common names plus their aliases, so both the written-out thumbs-up name and its plus-one alias resolve to the same emoji. Anything the map does not recognise is left exactly as you typed it and listed separately, which makes a typo in a shortcode easy to spot instead of quietly shipping it to a channel.

A searchable list lets you find and copy a single shortcode or emoji directly. Custom emoji uploaded to one workspace or server are in no public list, so those are always left untouched. Conversion runs 100% locally in your browser — nothing is uploaded, nothing is stored, and the tool keeps working offline.

Frequently asked questions

What is an emoji shortcode?

It is a name wrapped in colons that an app replaces with the matching emoji as you type. Slack, Discord and GitHub share most of the same names, which is why the same shortcode usually works in all three without any translation.

Why doesn't my emoji shortcode work?

Either the name is misspelled, or it is a custom emoji that only exists in one workspace or server. Custom emoji are never in a public list and cannot be converted here, so this tool leaves both cases untouched and lists them for you to check.

Are Slack and Discord emoji shortcodes the same?

Mostly. Both build on the same widely shared naming convention, so common codes match, but each platform adds names of its own and admins upload custom ones. Test anything unusual in the platform itself before relying on it.

Can I convert emoji back into shortcodes?

Yes. Switch the direction and paste text containing emoji; each recognised one becomes its canonical name in colons. That is useful for putting emoji into source code, YAML or a commit message where a literal character is awkward.

Does an emoji count as one character?

On screen yes, but in code an emoji is often several code points — a flag is two, and a family emoji can be seven or more. That is why a caption with many emoji can hit a platform limit sooner than the visible character count suggests.
