Income Tax Bracket Calculator
Apply a fully editable progressive bracket table to your income and see tax per band, total tax, marginal rate, effective rate and take-home pay.
No country's rates are built in. Every threshold and rate below is yours to edit, and the presets are only starting points for the year and filing status they name — they exclude payroll taxes, state and local tax, credits, phase-outs and surcharges. Check them against your tax authority before relying on the result.
US federal income tax brackets for tax year 2023, single filer, with the $13,850 standard deduction. Federal ordinary income only: no state or local tax, no payroll tax, no credits, phase-outs or alternative minimum tax. Check the current IRS tables before relying on it.
Bracket table — edit freely
Each row is the income at which a rate starts. The first row must start at 0, and the last row runs to infinity. Rates apply only to the slice of income inside each band, which is why a raise into a higher bracket never lowers your take-home pay.
Tax by bracket
| Band | Rate | Income taxed here | Tax |
|---|---|---|---|
| $0 to $11,000 | 10.00% | $11,000.00 | $1,100.00 |
| $11,000 to $44,725 | 12.00% | $33,725.00 | $4,047.00 |
| $44,725 to $95,375 | 22.00% | $26,425.00 | $5,813.50 |
| $95,375 to $182,100 | 24.00% | $0.00 | $0.00 |
| $182,100 to $231,250 | 32.00% | $0.00 | $0.00 |
| $231,250 to $578,125 | 35.00% | $0.00 | $0.00 |
| $578,125 and above | 37.00% | $0.00 | $0.00 |
| Taxable income $71,150 | 15.40% | $71,150.00 | $10,960.50 |
The effective rate in the footer is against taxable income; the headline effective rate above is against gross income, before deductions.
Tax in each band is (min(taxable income, band ceiling) − band floor) × rate, summed across bands. Worked check against the published US federal 2023 single-filer table: $50,000 of taxable income gives $1,100 + $4,047 + $1,160.50 = $6,307.50, and $100,000 gives $17,400 — a 17.40% effective rate on taxable income. This is a modelling tool for any bracket system you enter, not tax advice; confirm every figure with your tax authority or an accountant.

About the Income Tax Bracket Calculator
The ByteTools Income Tax Bracket Calculator hardcodes no country's rates. You enter the thresholds and rates yourself in an editable table, along with your income, deduction and any other allowances, and it applies each rate only to the slice of income inside that band — the way a progressive system actually works.
The output separates the two rates people confuse: your marginal rate, which is what the next unit of income is taxed at, and your effective rate, which is the total tax divided by what you earned. A per-band table shows exactly how much income was taxed at each rate and what it cost, and the whole breakdown can be copied out.
Presets are provided as clearly labelled starting points for a named year and filing status, and they exclude payroll taxes, state and local tax, credits and phase-outs. Everything runs in your browser with nothing uploaded. This is a modelling tool for whatever bracket system you enter, not tax advice — confirm every figure with your tax authority or an accountant.
Frequently asked questions
How do tax brackets actually work?
Each rate applies only to the income inside its band, not to everything you earn. Moving into a higher bracket taxes the extra income at the higher rate while everything below stays where it was, so a raise can never reduce your take-home pay.
What is the difference between marginal and effective tax rate?
Your marginal rate is what the next dollar is taxed at; your effective rate is total tax divided by income. On $100,000 of taxable income under the US federal 2023 single-filer table, the marginal rate is 24% but the effective rate is 17.40%.
How do I calculate tax owed by bracket?
For each band, multiply the income falling inside it by that band's rate and add the results up. On $50,000 of taxable income under the 2023 single-filer table that is $1,100 + $4,047 + $1,160.50 = $6,307.50.
Why are no tax rates built into this calculator?
Because rates change every year and differ by country, state and filing status, so a hardcoded table goes stale and quietly gives wrong answers. Presets here name the year and filing status they came from and are yours to edit before you trust them.
Does this include payroll tax, state tax or credits?
No. It models a single progressive income tax schedule. Social security and payroll taxes, state and local income tax, tax credits, phase-outs and surcharges all sit outside it and need to be handled separately.
Can I use it for a country other than the US?
Yes — that is the point of the editable table. Enter your own thresholds and rates for any progressive system, and use the allowance field for a personal allowance. Just remember it does not model allowance tapers or special bands.
