What are the mean, median and mode?

The mean is the sum divided by the count (the average). The median is the middle value when the data is sorted. The mode is the value that appears most often. Together they describe the centre of a dataset in different ways.

How do you find the median?

Sort the numbers and take the middle one. If there is an even number of values, average the two middle ones. For 3, 5, 7, 9 the median is (5 + 7) ÷ 2 = 6. The calculator sorts and computes this for you.

Can a dataset have more than one mode?

Yes. If two or more values share the highest frequency, the data is multimodal and every mode is listed. If no value repeats, there is no mode at all, and the calculator says so explicitly.

What is the range of a dataset?

The range is the difference between the largest and smallest values, showing how spread out the numbers are. For 4, 9, 2, 15 the range is 15 − 2 = 13. It is a simple measure of variability.

When should I use the median instead of the mean?

The median is more robust when the data has outliers or is skewed, because extreme values do not pull it the way they pull the mean. For incomes or house prices, the median often describes the typical value better.
