About the Ratio Calculator
The ByteTools Ratio Calculator has two modes. Simplify mode reduces a ratio like 24:36 to its lowest terms, 2:3, using the greatest common divisor. Proportion mode solves A:B = C:? by cross-multiplying to find the missing term, which is perfect for scaling recipes, maps and mixtures.
It is useful for students, designers working with aspect ratios, cooks scaling ingredients and anyone splitting amounts fairly. Each answer comes with the working shown so the method is clear, not just the number.

Frequently asked questions
How do you simplify a ratio?
Divide both terms by their greatest common divisor. For 24:36 the GCD is 12, so the simplified ratio is 2:3. A ratio is in simplest form when the two terms share no common factor other than 1.
How do you solve a proportion?
In A:B = C:D, cross-multiply so A × D = B × C, then solve for the unknown. If A:B = C:? then the missing term is (B × C) ÷ A. The calculator shows this cross-multiplication step.
Can I simplify ratios with decimals?
Yes. The calculator scales decimal terms up to whole numbers first, then reduces, so 1.5:2 becomes 3:4. This keeps the ratio exact rather than rounding.
What is the difference between a ratio and a proportion?
A ratio compares two quantities, like 2:3. A proportion is a statement that two ratios are equal, like 2:3 = 4:6. Use Simplify mode for a single ratio and Proportion mode when two ratios are set equal.
Is my calculation uploaded anywhere?
No. All ratio maths runs in your browser with JavaScript. No values are transmitted or stored, so the tool is private and works even without an internet connection.
