The trickiest cases are the ones around midnight and noon, and they are handled explicitly. Midnight is 0000, noon is 1200, and 12:xx AM maps to 00:xx rather than 12:xx — the single most common mistake people make when converting by hand.

Frequently asked questions

What is 1800 in military time?

1800 is 6:00 PM. From 1300 onwards you simply subtract 12 from the first two digits to get the PM hour, so 1800 minus 12 gives 6 PM. It is spoken as eighteen hundred hours.

Is midnight 0000 or 2400 in military time?

Midnight at the start of a day is 0000, and that is what this converter outputs. Some organisations write 2400 for midnight at the end of a day, but 0000 is the standard and unambiguous form used by NATO and most healthcare systems.

How do you convert 12:30 AM to military time?

12:30 AM becomes 0030, not 1230. Any AM time in the 12 o'clock hour maps to the 00 hour, because midnight starts the day. This is the conversion people get wrong most often, so the tool flags it clearly.

Do you say hours after every military time?

Only on the hour. 1400 is spoken fourteen hundred hours, but 1435 is normally spoken fourteen thirty-five with no hours on the end. The tool shows the conventional spoken form for whatever you type.

Does military time use a colon?

No. Military time is written as four digits with no colon and no AM or PM — 0930, 1715, 2359. Civilian 24-hour time in Europe and Asia usually keeps the colon, as in 17:15, but the numbers are identical.
