Cost to run one appliance
One US therm is 100,000 BTU = 29.3001 kWh, and one CCF is converted with the therm factor printed on your bill. Metric meters convert as kWh = m³ × volume correction × calorific value ÷ 3.6, the formula used on UK bills. Appliance cost uses the effective rate for the whole bill, so it includes the share of standing charge and tax. Every rate, factor and block here is editable because tariffs differ by supplier and region — check yours against your latest statement.

About the Natural Gas Cost Calculator
The ByteTools Natural Gas Cost Calculator does two jobs. First it converts your meter reading between therms, CCF, cubic metres, kilowatt-hours and megajoules using the same factors printed on real bills — the therm factor for CCF, and the volume correction and calorific value for metric meters. Both are editable because suppliers publish their own.
Second, it prices the bill. Choose whether your rates are quoted per therm, per CCF, per cubic metre or per kWh, pick a flat rate or build a tiered block table, then add a standing charge per day and tax. You get a block-by-block breakdown, the bill total, and the effective cost per therm and per kWh once fixed charges are included.

Frequently asked questions
How many kWh are in a therm of natural gas?
One US therm is 100,000 BTU, which works out to 29.3001 kWh. That is the figure this calculator uses, and it is why 80 therms of gas is about 2,344 kWh of energy — far more than most homes use in electricity over the same period.
What is the difference between a therm and a CCF?
A CCF is 100 cubic feet, a measure of volume, while a therm is a measure of energy. Because gas quality varies, bills print a therm factor to convert between them — usually between 1.02 and 1.06 therms per CCF. The factor is editable here.
How do I convert cubic metres of gas to kWh?
The standard formula on UK bills is kWh = m³ × 1.02264 × calorific value in MJ/m³ ÷ 3.6. At a typical calorific value of 39.5, that is about 11.22 kWh per cubic metre. Both the correction factor and the calorific value are editable inputs.
How much does it cost to run a gas furnace per hour?
Take the furnace's input rating in BTU per hour, divide by 100,000 to get therms per hour, and multiply by your gas rate. A 60,000 BTU/h furnace at 1.20 dollars per therm costs about 72 cents an hour. Enter your own figures in the appliance panel above.
Why is my gas bill higher than the unit rate suggests?
Standing charges and tax are the usual culprits, and tiered tariffs push heavy usage into more expensive blocks. This calculator shows the effective cost per therm after all of it, which is normally noticeably higher than the headline unit rate — especially in a low-usage summer month.
Are the default gas rates in this calculator accurate for my area?
No, and they are not meant to be. Gas tariffs vary by supplier, region and season, and change frequently. The defaults are illustrative placeholders — copy the blocks, standing charge and conversion factors straight off your latest statement for a real answer.
