Each rate block is charged only on the volume that falls inside it, so a rising block tariff never applies the top rate to your whole usage. Sewer is handled four ways because utilities differ: a percentage of the water charge, a flat rate per unit, its own block table, or none at all. Add the fixed service charge, tax and the number of days in the period and you get the bill total, the effective cost per unit, per thousand gallons and per cubic metre, and the cost per day.

A final panel answers the question people actually came for: what would using less save? Cut usage by a percentage and the same tariff is recalculated, so you see the real saving including the effect of dropping out of an expensive top block. Everything runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded.

Frequently asked questions

How is a tiered water rate calculated?

Each block is charged only on the volume inside it. With blocks of 0–6 CCF at 2.50, 6–12 at 3.50 and above 12 at 5.00, a 15 CCF month costs 6×2.50 + 6×3.50 + 3×5.00 = 51.00. The top rate never applies to your whole usage.

What is a CCF on a water bill?

CCF stands for one hundred cubic feet, the most common billing unit for water in the US. One CCF is 748.05 US gallons or 2.832 cubic metres. This calculator converts between all of them so you can enter whichever number your meter shows.

Why do I pay a sewer charge based on my water usage?

Most utilities have no meter on what leaves your house, so they bill sewer as a proportion of the water that came in — often 70 to 110 per cent of the water charge. Some have their own block table instead, which this calculator also supports.

How much water does the average household use?

US single-family homes average roughly 8,000 to 12,000 gallons a month, or 10 to 16 CCF, though irrigation in summer can double that. UK and European metered households typically use 10 to 15 cubic metres a month. Your own meter reading is the only figure that matters here.

Will cutting my water use by 20% cut my bill by 20%?

Almost never. Fixed service charges do not move at all, and on a rising-block tariff the savings come off your most expensive block first — which can actually make the percentage saving larger than the percentage cut. The reduction panel above works this out exactly.

Are the default rates in this calculator real?

No. Water tariffs are set locally and change every year, so the blocks shown are illustrative starting values only. Copy the blocks, fixed charge and sewer basis from your own statement before trusting any total.
