The required annual payment is the lesser of your current-year safe harbour and your prior-year safe harbour, minus withholding already paid. Equal instalments simply split the balance four ways. The annualised-income method multiplies the income you actually earned through each period by that period’s annualisation factor (4, 2.4, 1.5 and 1 on the federal Form 2210 Schedule AI), applies your effective rate, and requires the cumulative share for that instalment — 22.5%, 45%, 67.5% and 90% by default. Every percentage, factor and due date above is an editable field. This is a planning estimate, not tax advice; confirm dates and rates for your jurisdiction and year.

About the Estimated Tax Payment Calculator
The ByteTools Estimated Tax Payment Calculator works out the required annual payment that keeps you inside the safe harbour, then splits it into quarterly instalments. It takes the lesser of a percentage of this year's projected tax and a percentage of last year's tax, subtracts withholding you have already paid and shows what is left to send.
Freelancers, landlords and anyone with income that is not withheld at source can use it two ways. Four equal instalments suit steady earnings; the annualised income method suits a quiet spring and a busy autumn, using each period's annualisation factor and cumulative percentage so you do not overpay early.
All figures are calculated in your browser and nothing is uploaded. Safe-harbour percentages, annualisation factors, cumulative percentages and due dates are all editable inputs, because these are jurisdiction rules rather than universal constants. Planning estimates only, not tax advice.
Frequently asked questions
How much should I pay in quarterly estimated taxes?
Enough to hit the safe harbour: the lesser of a percentage of this year's expected tax and a percentage of last year's tax, minus withholding, divided into four. With 24,000 projected at 90% and 21,000 last year at 100%, the requirement is 21,000, so after 4,000 of withholding each quarter is 4,250.
What is the estimated tax safe harbour?
It is the payment level that protects you from an underpayment penalty even if you end up owing more. Federally that is generally 90% of the current year's tax or 100% of the prior year's, rising to 110% of the prior year when your previous income was above the higher-income limit.
What is the annualised income method?
It matches instalments to when you actually earned the money instead of assuming an even year. Each period's income to date is multiplied by an annualisation factor, taxed, and compared to a cumulative percentage of the annual requirement, so a slow first quarter does not force a full payment.
Do I still owe estimated tax if I have a W-2 job?
Possibly not, because withholding counts toward the requirement and is treated as if paid evenly through the year. Enter it in the withholding field: if it already covers the safe-harbour amount, the remaining balance drops to zero and no estimated payments are needed.
What happens if I miss a quarterly payment?
An underpayment penalty is charged on the shortfall for the period it was outstanding, and paying extra later does not fully undo a missed earlier instalment. The cumulative shortfall column shows how far behind you are at each due date.
Are the due dates and percentages fixed?
No. Every due date, safe-harbour percentage, annualisation factor and cumulative percentage is an editable field, because they differ by jurisdiction and change over time. Confirm the current rules for your situation before you rely on the schedule.
