Reading Time Calculator
Estimate how long a text takes to read or read aloud. Paste your text or enter a word count, set the words-per-minute speed, and get the time.
Summary
31 words · 8 sec read at 238 wpm · 14 sec spoken at 130 wpm
Handy as the “1min read” label on a blog post or for checking a presentation script fits its slot.
Reading speed varies with difficulty, familiarity and language — technical text is much slower than fiction, so treat these as estimates. Your text is analysed in your browser and never uploaded.
What is the Reading Time Calculator?

About the Reading Time Calculator
The ByteTools Reading Time Calculator estimates how long a piece of writing takes to get through. Paste the text — or just type the word count if you already have it — set a reading speed, and you get the reading time, the time it would take to read aloud, and how many pages it fills.
It is built for the practical questions: what should the “5 min read” label on a blog post say, will this speech fit a ten-minute slot, how long will tonight's chapter take, is this lecture script too long for the session. Reading and speaking speeds are separate sliders because people read far faster than they talk.
Presets cover careful reading, reading aloud, average silent reading, fast reading and skimming, and you can drag either slider to any value in between. Word counts, character counts, sentences and paragraphs are all computed in your browser — your text is never uploaded.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to read 1000 words?
About four minutes at the average adult silent reading speed of 238 words per minute. Read aloud at around 130 words per minute it takes closer to eight minutes.
What is the average reading speed?
Research on adult silent reading of general non-fiction puts the average near 238 words per minute, with fiction slightly faster and technical material considerably slower. Reading aloud typically runs between 120 and 150 words per minute.
How many words is a 10 minute speech?
Roughly 1,300 words at a comfortable 130 words per minute. Set the speaking slider to your own pace — nervous speakers run fast, and pauses for slides or questions add time that no word count can predict.
How accurate is a reading time estimate?
It is a rough guide. Difficulty, familiarity, layout, images and language all change real reading speed, and skim-readers may finish in a third of the time. Use it for labelling and planning, not for precise timing.
How many words fit on a page?
About 250 words on a double-spaced page and around 500 single-spaced, in a standard 12-point serif font. The words-per-page setting is editable so you can match your own formatting.
